Bobbie the Safety Boat came to Thunder Bay for the month of May.

As submitted by Jim Foster
I contacted some local schools to have a visit from Bobbie with the view to teaching primary classes about water safety. I adapted the script somewhat from the book to better suit the younger children and did vary the presentation somewhat depending on the interest. We found that the session was best suited for ages 3 to 7; preschoolers to Grade one. Originally we included Grade two’s as well but found they were too old for this type of presentation and focused on how Bobbie worked. Smaller groups of twenty children worked best for the workshop so there was a chance for all to interact. We asked for class lists ahead of time so Bobbie could call up the children by name. This was great as
they were so impressed that Bobbie knew their name! We also did the session in the gyms of the school to allow for large movement for Bobbie rather than in a classroom where mobility is very limited.

On May 25,2008 D8 members Rose Fahl, Ed Friedrich and Jim Foster attended the Teddy Bear Picnic. Although the weather did not cooperate fully (light rain and cold wind) 45,000 parents and their kids were in attendance. This event marked the unveiling of our Zodiac Hurricane interactive display. Ed and Rose were busy at 7:00am setting up a tarp over the boat using PVC pipe and lots of black electrical tape.
